For Main Event and Young Rockers Matinee tickets are “On Sale” through www.ticketmaster.ie and www.tickets.ie.
Priced €30.15 (inc booking fee) for main event.
No acts confirmed so far, except Faither Jack on the Decks and Jimmy Coup who will Co-ordinate the YOUNG ROCKERS MATINEE. We will definitely be needing 2/3 under 18’s Acts on this occasion, for as Eamon Carr wisely noted at the 10th Anniversary Vibe in the Point Depot in ‘96: “What was happening then is happening now” - before knocking out an impromptu poem on his typewriter to the refrains of Trad Lizzy.
MAIN EVENT:
4th Jan. 2013 @The Button Factory - 8pm
Will be exactly as it says on the label. 4/5 Top Notch Acts at the Top of their Game with Faither Jack slipping in some Rare Groove Mixes at 11 plus on the Richter Scale.
This year’s Vibe Title “DUBLIN” is taken from the New Day EP (‘71), which opens up all kinds of possibilities for something musically tasteful to develop.
Vibe
For Philo – “DUBLIN”
Dublin’s Bailey pub is more immediately
associated with James Joyce,
Brendan Behan, and Patrick Kavanagh than Rock and Roll. Yet it was
here in 1981 that Phil Lynott asked long-time friend Smiley Bolger to
“do a vibe for me sometime.” Bolger, a DJ and Promoter, had just won
the Alternative Eurovision Song
Contest and Phil loved the idea. It
was filed to the back of Smiley’s
mind, with the provision that the
occasion “should be appropriate.” Little did he realize that he would
remember this conversation in a few short years when the news broke of Philip’s untimely demise.
The first few Vibes took their inspiration from the Traditional Irish
Wake but somewhere along the way, Dublin rubbed it's magic over the
event and 27 years on were still wondering how it;s continued so long.
At the start there was no great plan or stratagy which allowed for
wonderful things to happen. The live video feed backdrop arrived as a
means of decorating the Olympia and hiding the stage set. It's still
with us. Belly Dancers performed at Barry's Hotel, several years
before U2 developed Mysterious Ways. In fact Traditional Irish, Sean
Nos, Acapella, Jazz, Blues, Rap, and Hip Hop artists have all
interpreted Lynott songs at the Vibe. Video Artists have also done their
thing with interesting results. A nod to how easily Philo strode the
different musical world defying classification and being pigeon holed
into a box. From Ex-Lizzies , through Def Leopard, Henry Rollins, to
Gerry Fish, Sinead O'Connor, Maria Doyle-Kennedy, to Damien Dempsey - the list of past performers is impressive -. the interpretations often stunning - and of course, theres a good helping of Live and Dangerous by the hottest Tribute Acts on the planet from Japan, the US, Scandanavia, Britain, or beyond.
2013 is the year of The Gathering, but the Vibe has been doing that
for over two decades as it brings supporters, like a leather clad clan
Gathering from Belgium, Holland, Germany, France, Scandinavia,
Britain, USA, Australia, Canada, Japan, and beyond, to honour one of
Dublin's favourite sons. Things kick off with the traditional Pre-Vibe
on the 3rd, followed by the Main Event the following day. As we fall
on a weekend this time around we continue the tradition of holding a
Young Rockers Matinee on the 5th - featuring some
really hot talent on the verge of breaking through, some of our favourite old friends as surprise guests, and some of the talent from The Vibe itself. This is
an alcohol free show and aimed at under eighteens. In a spirit of
fairness though, over eighteens need not be accompanied by a minor,
The Vibe is more than just a Tribute Show. It has grown into a whole
event only a part of which is the show itself. A search on the web
shows the international friendships, which have developed over the
years in and around the 4th January. Like a leather-clad Clan-Gathering they come from Belgium, Holland, Germany, Scandinavia, Britain, USA, Australia, Canada, Japan, and beyond. The work carried out by the Vibe team over the years has ensured that the days running up to the show are Philo days with almost every radio DJ in Ireland playing a Lynott or Lizzy song on their show.
Virtually every major venue in Dublin has hosted the Vibe as it
crosses the river Liffey from North to South. In recent years Phil’s
boyhood stomping-ground of Crumlin hosted the show at the Submarine Bar. Some venues held thousands, some hundreds, the over-riding concern being to find the right place to suit the theme being explored that year. The bottom of the bill is as important as the top. That’s where you find the likes of a Damien Dempsey, Dublin’s Folk-Rap Poet, who’s “Dublin Town” is not just a tribute to Philo but to the Vibe
itself.
